A Second Third of The Shield, Seth Rollins

A few days ago I did a piece on Dean Ambrose. I speculated that Ambrose may have the potential to become WWE's next big heel, I intend to follow the same tradition in this article, I would like to dedicate this article to the potential of Seth Rollins. While I don't believe Rollins can become one of WWE's top heels, I do believe he can become a big name player.

Seth Rollins was once upon a time known as Tyler Black. He made a name for himself for having great matches with anyone with his unique wrestling style.

Tyler Black wrestled all over the world in countless independent promotions but it was at ROH where Black gained recognition. In one of ROH's most controversial angles Black was a part of  "Age of the Fall" an angle that was so conversational the footage had to be removed from a PPV but it was eventually shown because it was eagerly requested by hardcore ROH fans. "Age of the Fall" was a trio of heels that assaulted wrestlers, referees and competed in several tag team matches that ended in a no contest. This angle eventually led to tag team gold for Tyler Black and Jimmy Jacobs.

In 2008 Black began to breakout as a ROH singles star. He had World Title matches against Nigel McGuinnes, Christopher Daniels and Claudio Castagnoli. It was also in this year that Jacobs turned on his friend Black which led to a Steel Cage match at Violent Tendencies that was won by Black.

In 2009 Black won a Survival of the Fittest tournament that earned him another ROH World Title match. At Final Battle Black wrestled Austin Aries to a 60 minute time limit draw. At the companies eighth anniversary show Black pinned Aries in a rematch to win the ROH World Title.

In 2010 word had broke that Tyler Black had a signed a developmental contract with WWE. This led to a heel turn, Black began to critize fans who claimed he had sold out. and he threatened to take the World Championship with him to WWE. He also refused to defend it in a match against Davey Richards which he lost. However at Glory by Honor Black lost the Championship to Roderick Strong.

Rollins debuted on WWE's developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling on September 30 losing to Michael McGillicutty. Rollins won the FCW 15 Jack Brisco Classic Tournament beating Hunico in the finals to become the first FCW 15 Champion.

In 2011 Rollins feuded with Dean Ambrose over the FCW 15 Championship that featured a 15 minute, 20 and eventually ended in a 30 minute time limit match with Rollins scoring the victory. Their trio of matches is held in high by wrestling fans. Rollins would go on to drop the Championship to Damien Sandow.

Seth Rollins would go on to make his NXT debut in 2012. Seth Rollins became the first NXT Champion by beating Jinder Mahall in a Gold Rush Tournament. He would have several successful title defences against Mahall and McGillicutty.

Seth Rollins finally made his WWE debut on November 18 at Survivor Series aiding WWE Champion CM Punk in defending his Title as a part of The Shield.

Rollins now a part of The Shield successfully defended his NXT Championship against Cory Graves with the help of The Shield. Rollins however would go on to lose his Title to Big E Langston and The Shield would be banned from appearing at NXT. Rollins stated that he was not one with the NXT Title.

The Shield beat Team Hell No and Ryback at Tlc in their debut match. They would also go on to defeat John Cena, Ryback and Sheamus at Elimination Chamber and the team of Sheamus, Randy Orton and Big Show in their Wrestlemania debut.

The Shield is a group of renegades including Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns. They claim to be a "Shield" from injustice. Their PPV win streak is very impressive and on top of that they beat Chris Jericho, Ryback and Sheamus on Monday Night Raw. Have you ever seen three young guys make an impact in such a short time? Whilst Dean Ambrose stands out the most, I do consider Rollins to the best wrestler of the trio. Rollins has demonstrated a small fraction of what he's capable of in the ring, he has taken out several WWE Superstars with an impressive springboard knee strike.

Rollins has a lot of energy and he stands out as a terrific wrestler. He's certainly backed it up over the years. His wrestling arsenal consists of kicks, high flying moves and his impressive springboard knee attack. He's certainly a great and fresh addition to WWE's roster which opens the door for many possible feuds in the future. However In my opinion Rolins is better suited in a face role with his entertaining ring style.

So what do you guys think?

  1. Love this article, one of your best yet, you've gone into great detail to show the emergence of Tyler Black/Seth Rollins, so well done. I'm no intrigued to see some of these ROH matches to see how brutal they are. Well Done and I am now looking forward to your third article regarding The Shield.
