Time was in WWE, if there was a title to fight for, you fought for it, tooth and nail. The secondary title was just as important as the world titles, for the midcard at least, as it was their way to get noticed, to get exposure, let's not forgot that it catapulted John Cena into the main scene, for better or worse (the answer's worse) and going even further back men like Buddy Rodgers held it, it was made to look legitimate, because in a way it was, the talent really wanted that belt.
Now however, it seems legitimacy really doesn't matter. After a year or two worth of meaningless title reigns and changes, WWE finally put the title on a legitimate looking champion in Antonio Cesaro, who defended the title with valour and looked good doing it. He made the title look as though it was worth winning, making himself look impressive in the process.
However, as we came into 2013, things turned sour for Mr Cesaro, now according to rumours Mr McMahon isn't high on Cesaro, not that we would know what Vincent K McMahon is ever truly thinking. Cesaro was relegated to being nothing more than a jobber - bar a very good fued with The Miz, which if we're honest, could have lasted longer, and been better for both parties - everything finally came to a head a week after Wrestlemania (an event by the way that the US Title wasn't defended on) he lost his title and his 9 month reign to - drum roll please - Kofi Kingston, the WWE's resident transitional champion.
That's not to say Kofi Kingston, isn't good, because he is, but on par with Cesaro and his previously dominant title reign? I think not, Kofi will be lucky to hold the title for 2 months (mind you, saying that, this is the WWE we're talking about).
The way booking seems to be going, Fandango is gearing to be a champion, be it US or IC we don't know, but as I predicted in my Wrestlemania review, he should soon be champion. And I'm not truly sold on the either, however good his theme music is, and however good Y2J makes him, will we ever see him as anything more than Johnny Curtis with sparkles?
